Carl Gwartney died peacefully in his sleep this morning,
April 18, at his home in San Diego. Carl, born in 1920, was a 2nd Lt and a glider
pilot in the 29th squadron of the 313 Troup Carrier Group in World War II. Carl flew a glider
to liberate Holland in 1944. He was well known in model plane circles as seen
by his award winning, scale model CG 4A glider, in the picture. Carl served in Africa Sicily, Holland and France.
49th Squadron/313th Troop Carrier Group, WWII Glider Pilot Training,
='0 ( Uncle Carl I will always remember you. Building things out of wood with you and collecting tennis balls from the yard and waiting you fly your model airplanes. Most of all listening to you tell the story of the war no school book can tell. I fell so bad I hadn't gotten to come by your house lately and talk with you.
